Hilmar Gunnlaugsson is a Supreme Court Lawyer, entrepreneur and co-founder and CEO of Yggdrasill Carbon Ltd. His principal areas of expertise include energy law, property law, corporate law and administrative law.

Throughout his legal career, Hilmar has been entrusted with a wide range of significant assignments for Icelandic ministries, energy companies, municipalities and landowners, particularly in matters involving energy, land use, property and regulatory affairs.

Since 2010, Hilmar has worked closely with forest and landowners across Iceland, both individually and through their associations, with a vision of developing climate- and biodiversity-positive projects that create new long-term income opportunities for landowners and local communities while helping restore Iceland’s degraded land and ecosystems.

This led to the establishment of Yggdrasill Carbon Ltd. (YGG), when Hilmar joined forces with Swiss entrepreneur David J. Blumer around a shared vision: to create high-integrity, land-based climate projects that deliver measurable benefits for the climate, nature and local communities.

Today, YGG develops nature-based carbon removal projects across Iceland, connecting landowners and high-quality projects with companies seeking credible, long-term climate action.
