Ian Brettell practised as a lawyer in Australia for several years before completing a PhD in genetics at the University of Cambridge. He has recently joined the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich to help translate the lab's global-scale biodiversity research into practical outcomes through policy mechanisms. His current focus is the SEED Biocomplexity Index: a recent initiative of the lab that provides a holistic metric for tracking changes in biodiversity over time, for every terrestrial pixel on the planet. SEED will inform governments and businesses about the underlying state of biodiversity in their areas of activity, and about which interventions are most effective at restoring nature, thereby facilitating the transition into a nature positive economy.
