Jan Fehse

Managing Director
Value for Nature

Jan Fehse founded Value for Nature consulting in 2010. He has worked for over 25 years in nature-based solutions for climate change, focusing on project design and certification, national REDD+ programs and payment schemes for non-carbon ecosystem services. In his skillset Jan combines ecology, carbon modelling and accounting methodologies, project certification, rural development and community engagement, as well as carbon-related investment. Jan currently works with both project developers and investors, which provides him with insight into both sides’ needs. From 1996 Jan worked as an ecologist for one of the first ARR projects in the world in Ecuador and from 2000-2010 he worked for EcoSecurities.

In the last ten years, Jan's main focus has been on REDD+ readiness (national strategies and financial architecture), private investment into restorative and climate-compatible forestry and other land-based businesses, and carbon and biodiversity certification for ecosystem services conservation and sustainable forest management activities.

Previously, he spent ten years working with dozens of carbon forestry projects in the framework of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and voluntary carbon standards, being closely involved with project design and formulation, carbon quantification methodology development, carbon measurement and modeling, monitoring, financial assessment and project investment. He helped facilitate several carbon credit purchase and sales deals. Jan has worked for a wide range of clients including governments, the UN, multilateral development banks, NGOs and the private sector.

Jan has a robust understanding of land use change dynamics and drivers of deforestation, both globally and in specific countries, and of their interaction with policies and incentive mechanisms. He has field experience with the technical aspects of forestry operations and the scientific aspects of quantification and monitoring of carbon dynamics and other ecosystem services in forest systems, and of remote sensing and GIS techniques. He has in-depth knowledge of global carbon markets, the forest climate finance landscape (including private investment) and global climate change policy and has run various courses and workshops in this field.

Jan speaks fluent English, Dutch, German and Spanish and has working knowledge of French and Portuguese. He has working experience in over 30 countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
