Joel is an ecologist with 15 years’ experience in nature-based solutions for non-profits, United Nations and corporates and has worked on NBS in SE Asia for 12 years, most recently as manager of Shell’s Nature Based Solutions portfolio in Indonesia to identify, structure and deliver multi-million credit yielding NBS projects. He spent eight years with the UN advising governments on REDD+, six years of which were dedicated to carbon project design and implementation. In March 2023, he launched Southridge Group, a project development company that he co-founded to focus on high integrity climate change mitigation ventures. In Southridge he leads the full range of project activities, based out of Indonesia. He holds a PhD from Oxford University on international climate policy, carbon project design, governance, land economy, livelihoods and local communities, was a member of Verra’s VCS Program Advisory Group (2019-21) and has authored multiple academic articles on forestry/carbon.
