Steve joined South Pole in September, 2023, where he leads the company's Biodiversity Global practice. Prior to joining South Pole he worked in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, where he led IUCN’s work related to the mitigation hierarchy and engagement with high-impact sectors such as mining, energy and infrastructure. He led the IFC Natural Capital – Colombia Country Pilot, as well as the development of the IUCN policy on Biodiversity Offsets and coordinated the IUCN Niger Delta Panel and the Rio Doce Panel in Brazil. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Uruguay and subsequently worked for Conservation International where he worked globally on enterprise development, ecotourism, and corporate engagement.
Steve earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Idaho and his Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has experience across more than two dozen countries, spanning the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
